Harrison Ford, Shrinking, and God, Really? | Devotional #15

Insider Devotional:
August 21, 2026

Hey Reader,

I have a slight obsession with Harrison Ford. I used to tell people it was because of Indiana Jones, but I'm going to let you in on a little secret... It was actually because of Linus Larrabee in the 1995 remake of Sabrina.

And ever since watching that movie at 5 years old, I've wanted to go to Paris. (Still haven't, but maybe one day.)

So when Mike got a pair of Apple AirPods that included a year of Apple TV+, I was most excited to watch Shrinking since Harrison Ford is in it. No spoilers, I promise! But he tells people to do this thing where he sets a timer for 15 minutes, plays super sad music, cries until the alarm goes off, and then goes back to life.

And I immediately loved this idea. Still do. Because so many of us are emotionally suppressing, not emotionally regulating. And because of that, we're holding onto all these emotions until, eventually, it all bubbles over and we explode.

The Bible is pretty clear about its stance on crying it out.

Hannah wept bitterly before the Lord, so overwhelmed she could barely get the words out, and God heard her (1 Samuel 1:10-20).

When the Israelites groaned under slavery in Egypt, Scripture says God heard their cry and remembered them (Exodus 2:23-24).

David wrote, "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:17-18).

He even says God collects our tears, that not one is wasted (Psalm 56:8).

And the best part about crying it out is that we are NEVER alone. God is not only with us, He hears us, and He is concerned. Even if no words are spoken, those tears? They hold many words, and that is prayer.

So instead of letting our emotions take over and we lose control, let's schedule our breakdowns before they happen, so we still have enough left in us to show up and be all that we are called to be.

P.S.Take care of yourself. Even if that means putting on sad music for 15 minutes to let yourself cry. That release has power.
